These are the words Andrė invites us with to join her mystery of beauty and magic at the very beginning of her new program "Inner Faces". This project continues the general trends in the Andrė's creative inspirations of the last period. The performance unfolds within the collective emotional and energetic space where spontaneity of experiences and sensations common to listeners and performers are realized. Improvisation not only follows its inner logic and impetus, but also is affected by this collective energetics and actualizes itself as a dialogue, and its language is music. In this project Andrė appears not only as much more potent conductor of this collective musical realm. The musical language itself also undergoes some principal changes. The musical forms become less convoluted and acquire crystalline transparency losing all traces of heavyweight academicism. The lucid musical shapes flow effortlessly in the simple and beautiful fashion. Andrė takes inspiration from the entire variety of human musical tradition --- the Shamanic and Carnatic chant to the modern electronica and R&B. "Inner Faces" does not delve into the dark corners of human soul --- au contraire, the listener (or, better to say, co-performer) of the concert inadvertedly receives the huge share of positive energy and impetus. The goal of Andrė is to grant the people the positive and active thoughts, memories and intentions. |

< ... > Stop, turn, take a look around -- there are people everywhere. < ... > Tramps in their rags, haughty egocentrics, "positive" truth-seekers, paupers, intellectuals, foppish nouveaux riches... But there is one trait shared by the entire populace -- even by the most extreme varieties.
All of them conceal their true visages. They never venture into society without masks diligently obfuscating their private emotions. ...Back in 1722, François Couperin in the third volume of "Les folies françoises, ou Les dominos" brilliantly painted twelve various colourful masks -- musical dominos. But these Les dominos, in contrast with contemporary masks, did not cloak but subtly highlight selected human traits (e. g. pieces like "L'Ardeur sous le Domino incarnat", or "Coqueterie sous diferens Dominos", etc.). Jazz singer, pianist and composer Andrė Pabarčiūtė also pursues a clarity, refinement and grace of this kind, but uses her own unique approach. She rips the habitual masks off and reveals the infinite scale of real feelings and emotions. No one's -- be it a pauper or "high society" rake -- life is purely enlightened or entirely dark. It proceeds as the infinite variety of shades and colours. Andrė believes that the world, however complicated, is yet fair in the deepest sense: it endows the human beings with a gift of emotions and ability to share them. Bolstered by the force of her music, Andrė endeavours deeply into the convoluted inner workings of human soul, and reveals her discoveries at the improvizatory multimedia project "Inner Faces". At this event < ... > the true inner human faces are unveiled -- without faux feelings and free of simulated emotions. Unmasked. Genuine. Poignant vocals by A. Pabarčiūtė are brought to pass by the whole range of ever changing realms of human emotions: from the enlightened serenity to the morbid dread. Pieces -- sung by the composer herself -- become entangled with the improvization and dance -- here and now, against the backdrop of musical instruments and video screen. Extended vocal techniques -- in the tradition of Neo-Avant-Garde (György Ligeti, Dieter Schnebel) -- are widely used: screaming, whispering, vocalized deep in- and exhalations, breathy voice. These turned up especially efficient in amplification of encircling atmosphere of dreadfulness and horror sometimes called upon. The sound itself is constructed using echo techniques extending apparent soundscape up to incredible span, or sometimes creating cozy spaces resembling these of "Love Song and Farewell" by Mindaugas Urbaitis,-- happening to come from voices of subconsciousness and delay circuits. The usual, intelligible verbal discourse becomes atomized by these "unmasking" engines from the deepest layers of consciousness down to scated "words", isolated phonemes, fragments of torn-up lyrics used to express feelings cut to pieces by overwhelming Nowness. Rough and muted sonics (sh, dj, p) are alternated with lucid and warm outbursts (i, j, l, etc.). And sometimes the intact English text emerges from the abyss of sub-consciousness, and embraces with soothing words: "feel", "dream", "love"... The sights of nature (too often eclipsed by obtuse skyscrapers and buried beneath frigid highways) dominate the video screen; < ... > it was OK that these idyllic sights often have been contrasted with the emotions from Andrė. E. g., clear and shiny skies, combined with the vocals of dread, tension and ennui -- or the serene vocal melody pierced through a sheet of flames or thickening layers of black clouds... "Inner Faces" further develop the idea of earlier project "The Trip, or Inner Emigration" by Andrė. It tells a story about human being lost in the mad world. The overwhelming chaos is depicted by the very diverse instruments: accordion (in "The Trip..."), saxophone (Vygintas Kisevičius), bells, percussion (Bernardas Janauskas), electronics. Against this instrumental backdrop the authentic and genuine emotions are weaved by the open heart and voice of A. Pabarčiūtė. The captivating sincerity of Andrė chaperones out of daily routine those who, if only for a while, braced themselves enough to listen to their hearts and souls and perceive the encircling reality from their deepest core. Sometimes it takes so little -- just a single glance at the world from the more fundamental point of view,-- and the ever-the-same sad tale endlessly asseverated by reality becomes irrelevant and fades away. |
